It is known that the large number of particles shows various cooperative statics and dynamics depending on the value of parameters, boundary conditions, and interactions. In particular, ppOpen-APPL\/DEM restricts the object of the simulation to the discrete element method (DEM) particles. The DEM is known as one of the widely accepted numerical method addressing engineering problems in granular and discontinuous materials, powder mechanics, and rock mechanics, and earthquake mechanics. In DEM simulations, the particles are assumed to have short length dissipative interactions and not to have stateful contacts and complicated geometries, and, therefore, the DEM efficiently compute the cooperative behaviors of a large number of particles.
